Sharp Pain on One Side of Lower Back: This type of pain may
feel as if your abdomen is being split open with a knife from the inside

middle of a full-blown kidney stone attack. Many people try to alleviate
this pain by trying to find a position where the discomfort may dissipate.
While some believe lying on the floor helps, others find relief by sitting
upside down in a chair. Then, there are always painkillers, which make the
symptoms manageable but are not a cure-all.
Other signs to look for are
cloudy urine, a strange smell or usual color. For example, a deep orange
tint to the urine is usually a sign of dehydration. In this case, it is
best to quickly increase the amount of water and/or cranberry juice that
you drink. If the more minor symptoms do not go away or you notice any
unusual urine secretions, it is best to see a doctor as soon as possible.
Frequent, Urgent Urination/Inability to Urinate: Increases in
the frequency or the urgency of urination as well as the inability to

result of a stone moving through the ureter and towards the bladder. As it
does this, it may cause pressure that makes you feel like you need to
urinate frequently or it may lead to a burning sensation during urination.
Blood in Urine Stream: As a stone grows or travels downward,
blood may become present in the urine stream or be detected through a lab
test. Medically titled, Hematuria, the blood is the result of tissue damage
inside the kidney or within the lining of the ureter as the kidney stone
pushes its way through. If you are experiencing any of the aforementioned
symptoms, such as pain, fever, or disorientation, it would be good to check
your urine to see if you can detect any blood.
Medical history and Gender: Although women are just as likely to
develop kidney stones, more men seem to suffer from this problem.
Researchers also believe that a family history of kidney problems can
significantly increase the chances of developing kidney stones. It is
important to look into your own family history for any one else that may
have experienced kidney stones. Finding out in advance can help you
pinpoint your symptoms and get treatment more quickly. Preventive measures
can also be taken:
- Consider increasing your fluid intake, including water and
cranberry juice.
- Avoid excessive dairy consumption, particularly in the
evenings.
- Take precautions so that you never become severely
dehydrated, especially if you have a physically demanding job or work
in extreme climates. Be sure to drink a lot of water if this is the
case.
- Stay close to a bathroom because withholding urination for
an extended amount of time does not help.
Other Notable Facts about Kidney Stones Symptoms
Kidney stone symptoms seem to also flare up late at night or early in the
morning and tend to happen the least during the late afternoon. Researchers
believe the reasons behind this pattern could be due to minimal urine output or
constriction of the ureter during the early morning hours.
Quite often, when kidney stones to not move or are too small, they do not
produce any obvious symptoms. Referred to as "silent" stones, severe problems
could occur because they can be lodged in the ureter and possibly lead to
kidney damage and toxic conditions in the blood.
The Importance of Diagnosis
It is important to identify your symptoms because there are other possible
consequences of kidney stones. Partial or complete kidney obstruction from a
stone may lead to urine backing up in the blood, creating a potentially toxic
combination called urea. The result could be damage to the kidney tubules,
microscopic chemical plants that manufacture urine, and the related blood
vessels. This situation leads to even more severe problems. That’s why any of
the above kidney stone symptoms should be taken seriously.
